Tips for making your resume stand out

Your resume is your best chance at getting an interview and landing your dream job. Aside from a cover letter, it’s often the first thing an employer sees, so you need to put your best foot forward.

If you don’t have a resume, or you haven’t looked at yours in a long time, it can be difficult to know where to start.  If you don’t have a resume, you can download our simple resume template.

This article has some advice on how to make a good resume for a career in the home care sector, and a basic resume template for you to use to get started.

Keep it short and simple

Resumes are an essential part of your job search, but they’re meant to be a summary of your skills and experience, not a complete biography. If you write every detail from your past job, you risk overwhelming the employer and leaving out what is most relevant to the position you’re applying for now. Instead, focus your resume on the skills you have that will help you excel in the job you want now. Take a look at each of the roles (personal care worker, allied health assistant and enrolled nurse) on our website to get an idea about the types of things employers are looking for.

Use headings to break up content

Using suitable headings will help break up the content in your resume and will help draw the employer’s eye to the sections they want to focus on. In some cases, recruiters will also use artificial intelligence (AI) to scan resumes and headings can help group information together for easy scanning.

Profile your experience

Your experience section is undoubtedly one of the most important parts of your resume. When assessing suitable candidates, employers are often looking for people who can bring certain experiences to their workplace. When you talk about your experience, clearly outline your role, and add a summary of the work you undertook. If you have any achievements, you should add these in too.

Highlight your skills and attributes section, particularly for the home care sector

If care is in your DNA, and you have the right skills and attributes to take on a career in home care, this is the place to state it. A resume with a dedicated skills and attributes section can help you stand out from the crowd. Listing your skill sets and attributes you up to directly answer the employer’s question: “What can you do for me?” and “What type of person are you?” and “What support and care would you give to a client?” You can use short sentences to write about your skills and attributes or create a list. If you opt to create a list, make sure this section has some link back to the work that you have been doing.
