When care is in your DNA, you will know, just like Ramiro

From an incredibly early age, Ramiro knew that he wanted to help others, particularly the elderly. Choosing a career in home care was the perfect choice for him.

Ramiro works as a personal home care worker for BallyCara, an independent living and aged care service provider. BallyCara offers home care services to older Australians in Victoria.

Ramiro, originally from the Philippines, is passionate about taking care of others – something instilled in him from a young age where he was able to care for his great grandmother until her passing at 102 years old.

Ramiro says that it is part of his culture.

“Filipinos value caring for elder family members later in life, deriving personal fulfillment from caring for a loved one.

“My great grandmother inspired me to become a personal care worker.”

When Ramiro moved to the United Kingdom with his wife, who is a nurse, he chose to train and work at a nursing home. Continuing the same path Ramiro retrained in Sydney when the couple relocated to Australia almost 10 years ago, moving into home care.

“Meeting different people from all walks of life, building client relationships, and helping clients with a wide variety of tasks are what drew me to home care,

“The job is so varied. I will help my clients do a range of things, from helping with personal care, working with those in respite, gardening, shopping, and mobility

Ramiro is passionate about the job and would not change it for anything else.

“One of the biggest challenges I face is earning my client’s trust. When you earn their trust, they feel happy and secure. You need to be compassionate and patient because you are working with extremely vulnerable people. It is exciting when clients are happy and enjoy being with me. I learn a lot from clients from their life experiences and stories. It makes me a better person,” said Ramiro.
